Oranges hang from the branches all year round in Yichang. The city's ability to produce oranges in all seasons owes a lot to the technological innovation driven by people like Deng Xiuxin, an academician from Chinese Academy of Engineering, who is known as China's "Professor Citrus".

In this episode, Tom and his friend Tian visit the Zhilan Valley Base of the Zigui County Citrus Seed Breeding Center where more than 100 domestic and foreign high-quality citrus varieties are cultivated. To get the right mix of shape, color and sugar content is a multi-year effort for scientific researchers. Tom and Tian exclaim: "Big big tech in a small small fruit!"

In Yichang, oranges are eaten not only as fruit, but also in other dishes and food products. In the Qugu Food plant, in the Zigui County Industrial Park, oranges are processed into a range of products: orange wine, orange cakes, orange vinegar, orange peel snacks and canned oranges.

Yichang’s chefs have long appreciated the region’s oranges. Some famous Hubei dishes use orange peel as an ingredient – for example, Orange Peel Beef and Da Zhao Stewed Bacon.

As the saying goes: "Waste not, want not". The orange industry in Yichang makes full use of this wonderful fruit.
