The 2024 Dragon Boat Festival and Qu Yuan's Hometown Cultural Celebration kicks off today in Zigui County, Yichang, Hubei Province. This mega cultural event, themed "Poetic Yichang Celebrates Chinese Dragon Boat Festival," promises a vibrant month-long celebration honoring China's rich cultural heritage.
The opening ceremony began with a traditional Dragon Boat Festival ritual, presented through a combination of music, dance, poetry, and visual art. This presentation offered a glimpse into ancient Chu sacrificial rites, setting the stage for a month of immersive experiences.
Following the opening, an original performance of "China in the Songs of Chu" took center stage. Featuring renowned works from the classic Chu Ci (Songs of Chu), including "Ju Song (In Praise of an Orange)," "Tian Wen (Heavenly Questions)," and "Jiu Ge (Nine Songs)," the performance utilized the Qu Yuan Temple and Three Gorges Dam as a natural backdrop. Through the use of holographic and virtual technologies, the visuals brought the ancient poems to life.
The opening ceremony was synchronized with live-streaming on major Chinese and provincial media platforms, including Sina, NetEase, Baidu, and Yichang’s all-media platforms.
The following month-long celebrations will include the 2024 Dragon Boat Festival Market, traditional dragon boat races, Dragon Boat cultural exchange activities, the 2nd Yichang Fatty Fish Festival, and the 2024 poetry ancestral roots searching tour.
This year Qu Yuan’s Hometown Cultural Festival is hosted by the Hubei Provincial People's Government and organized by the Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the People's Government of Yichang City.
The festival holds significant cultural weight. In 2009, the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, encompassing Qu Yuan's Hometown Dragon Boat Cultural Festival and other related customs in Zigui, Yichang, was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition marks the festival as China's first to be included on this esteemed list.
Additionally, in April 2024, Qu Yuan's Hometown Dragon Boat Cultural Festival was designated as one of four provincial ministerial-level festivals in Hubei province.
