Yichang is set to host the Qu Yuan's Hometown Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Event in June 2024.
Qu Yuan (c. 340 BC – 278 BC) was a Chinese poet and politician who lived during the Warring States Period (475-221 BC). He was born in Zigui County, which is now part of Yichang. Qu Yuan is renowned for his contributions to classical poetry and verses, as well as his association with many Dragon Boat Festival traditions.
The mega cultural event, themed "Poetic Yichang Celebrates Chinese Dragon Boat Festival," will feature a range of activities throughout the month of June. These include the opening ceremony, a special program to be broadcasted by China Central Television Station (CCTV), and a series of celebrations.
Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony of the Dragon Boat Festival will take place on June 7 at Qu Yuan Square in Zigui. Following the ceremony, a traditional Dragon Boat Festival ritual will be presented through a combination of music, dance, poetry, and visual art. This presentation will showcase ancient Chu sacrificial rites. Subsequently, the original performance "China in the Songs of Chu" will be staged, featuring famous works from Chu Ci (Songs of Chu), such as "Ju Song (In Praise of an Orange)," "Tian Wen (Heavenly Questions)," and "Jiu Ge (Nine Songs)." The performance will utilize Qu Yuan Temple and the Three Gorges Dam as its natural backdrop. Through the use of holographic and virtual technologies, the show will bring the splendor of the "Songs of Chu" to life.
CCTV Special Program
China Central Television has filmed a special Dragon Boat Festival program in Yichang. This program will be aired on June 10, the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, during prime time on CCTV-3 and CCTV-15, as well as on CCTV's new media platforms.
