The Dragon Boat Festival occurs on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month to commemorate the death of the poet Qu Yuan (c. 340-278 BC). Born in Zigui County in Yichang, Qu is one of the greatest patriotic poets and politicians of ancient China. Dragon boat racing, a spectacular part of the festival, is also held in Yichang.
