Yichang City’s Yangtze River cleanup volunteer group’s members are dedicated to keeping China's longest river clean and healthy.
In June 2018, the Yangtze River Sentinels was established to carry out river patrol, drift cleaning, beach cleaning and other volunteer services.
The volunteers go out every week, fishing out garbage floating on the river and picking up trash along the banks, helping to purify the environment in the Xiaoting section of the Yangtze River.
To support the group's work, Yichang Hongxi Port Co., Ltd. has donated more than 200,000 yuan (US$28,945) to build a custom boat for the Yangtze River Sentinels.
“More and more people are getting involved in this work, including teenagers and the elderly. The 'Yangtze River Sentinels' is growing rapidly like a snowball," said Cheng Wenting, one of the founders of the Yangtze River Sentinels.
Up to now, more than 14,000 Yichang locals have joined the group and initiated cleaning activities over 1,000 times.
On April 24, the Yangtze River Protection Volunteer Service Alliance was established in Yichang, consisting of 36,335 volunteers across 139 volunteer teams, including the Yangtze River Sentinels.
Chen said that after joining the alliance more volunteer services will be provided in the future with other teams to restore the Yangtze River.
