The 16th Hubei Games will open tonight at the Yichang Olympic Sports Center, with over 30,000 in attendance, making it the largest ever sports event to be held in Hubei province.
The opening ceremony will highlight the theme of “water,” aiming to showcase a fusion of art and technology, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle for the audience.
The torch flame was collected at two locations, one at the Changyang Man site by lighting the "flame of historical culture,” and another at Three Gorges Dam by lighting the "Flame of Modern Civilization" before the two were merged in Zigui County - the hometown of Qu Yuan, one of the great poets in Chinese ancient history.
A total of 111 major events and 2108 minor events were divided into three categories: youth sports, mass sports, and social clubs, featuring 17 newly developed sports, including skiing, skating, ice hockey, equestrian, sailing, paddle boarding, fencing, archery, skateboarding, rock climbing, baseball and softball, and model sailing.
Yichang city will hold 83 of the major games while 28 games will be held in seven other cities across Hubei province, including Wuhan, Huangshi, Shiyan, Xiaogan, Xianning, Qianjiang and Tianmen.
For the first time, the Hubei Games offers online live streaming and playback. Some games held before the opening ceremony have already attracted over 10 million views online.
Adhering to the concept of an “open-door competition,” almost all categories and groups have removed the qualification restrictions for all Chinese citizens in Hubei.
