Xiaoting District is located in the southeast of Yichang’s urban area. It covers an area of about 119 square kilometers.

Xiaoting’s long history stretches back to the Neolithic era. Stone tools excavated at the Majiaxi site are believed to have been made by human beings more than 5,000 years ago.

Xiaoting has always been strategically significant. The "Battle of Xiaoting", also known as the Battle of Yiling, took place here during the Three Kingdoms period. It was fought between the state of Shu and the state of Wu in the years 221 and 222 A.D. and led to the final division of territory among the three kingdoms.

Today’s Xiaoting is a major industrial area home to big corporations such as Xingfa Chemicals, Hubei Yihua Chemical, GAC Motor, CSG and Angel Yeast. The district has fostered the growth of many of Yichang’s leading industries – fine chemicals, new materials, automobiles and automobiles parts, electric cables, and general aviation.

The district has an industrial park with an annual output value of over 10 billion yuan (US$1.45 billion), seven companies with an annual output value of over 1 billion yuan each and 27 companies with an annual output value of over 100 million yuan each.

Xiaoting is part of a powerful regional logistics hub. Two major expressways – the Shanghai-Chongqing expressway and the Shanghai-Chengdu expressway – pass through the area. There are also Yichang Sanxia Airport, Yunchi Deep Water Port, the Yichang Sanxia Bonded Logistics Center and a pipeline that transports natural gas from Sichuan to the eastern part of China.

Xiaoting is strong on innovation. It has 35 science and technology innovation platforms, 55 high-tech companies, as well as four niche technology "small giant" companies.

At the end of 2021, Xiaoting had about 70,000 permanent residents. In 2021, its GDP reached 17.6 billion yuan, an increase of nearly 20 percent on the previous year.
