Zhijiang is a city of half a million people in the Yichang region of Hubei Province.
Called Danyang in ancient times, Zhijiang has a long history. Sitting on the northern bank of the Yangtze, downstream from Yichang, it was the capital of the state of Chu for around 400 years until the capital was shifted to the now ruined city of Ying.
It is also famous for its Chinese liquor brewing technology. Zhijiang is one of many places in China that produce “baijiu” – literally, “white liquor”, a colorless liquor with an alcohol content up to 60% that seals many business deals in the Middle Kingdom.
The city is close to Jinhu Lake, a lake in the Yangtze River Economic Belt that has been the focus of an environmental upgrade. A 17-km-long walking and cycling path along one section of the lake is popular with residents and visitors alike.
Apart from Jinhu National Wetland Park, Zhijiang’s attractions include Jiji Village, Guanmiao Mountain site and Bailizhou island.
