Dangyang is a city in the Yichang region in western Hubei province, situated between the mountains and the Jianghan Plain.

One of the birthplaces of Chu culture, Dangyang is an area of historical and religious significance. The name Dangyang appears 57 times in the novel “Three Kingdoms”, one of the four classics of Chinese literature. It was the site of numerous battles during this period (AD 220-280) and is home to Yuquan Temple, one of the earliest and most famous Buddhist temples in China.

To the northeast of Yuquan Temples lies Guanling Temple, which commemorates Guan Yu, a famous general of the Kingdom of Shu (AD 221-263).

Modern Dangyang is a bustling county-level city with a population of 417,500, a GDP of around 57 billion yuan (US$ 8.2 billion) and an economy driven by foodstuffs, building materials, textiles and chemicals.

In June 2017, Dangyang City won the title of “National Sanitary City” for its efforts to beautify the city environment.
