Yichang in Central China and Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil established a sister city relationship for closer mutual cooperation in July 2006.
The friendship between Yichang and Foz do Iguaçu began with hydropower development. In 1996, when the China Three Gorges Corporation was conducting technical exchanges in Brazil, Foz do Iguaçu expressed its willingness to carry out friendly communication and cooperation with Yichang, where the Three Gorges Dam was located.
In November 2003, a delegation from Yichang visited Foz do Iguaçu. The two cities held an in-depth talk on establishing friendly and cooperative relations, eventually reaching a consensus on multi-level and multi-field cooperation around the theme of “Cities near Dams.”
In September 2004, a delegation from Foz do Iguaçu was invited to attend The First International Forum on Urban Development near Dams in Yichang. During the event, the two cities signed a formal agreement on friendly and cooperative relations.
Located near Iguaçu Falls in Brazil, Foz do Iguaçu borders the Argentine city of Puerto Iguazú and the Paraguayan city of Ciudad del Este. Their economy is built primarily on tourism.
The Iguaçu Falls, located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, is one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World.” It consists of 257 waterfalls that combined have a total width of 2.7 km.
The Itaipu dam located at the falls is the world's second largest hydroelectric plant in power generation, after the Three Gorges Dam in China. With 20 generator units and 14,000 MW of installed capacity, it provides approximately 15 percent of the energy consumed in the entirety of Brazil and 86 percent of the energy consumed in Paraguay.
Foz do Iguaçu and Yichang have worked in close cooperation with fruitful exchanges when it comes to hydroelectric development, urban development near dams and tourism.
In March 2016, the two cities signed the "2016-2018 Cooperation Action Plan" to promote communication and cooperation in the fields of urban planning, construction, management, ecological environment protection, tourism, agriculture, food and modern logistics.
