Wufeng Baixi River National Wetland Park

Karst is a type of landscape where the bedrock – like the limestone in Wufeng Baixi Wetlands - dissolves to create sinkholes, sinking streams, caves, springs and other features. Wufeng Baixi River National Wetland Park was officially recognized as a national level wetland park in 2019. It is one of the few canyon type permanent river wetlands in China.

Rich in plant and animal resources, the wetland is home to dozens of endangered and rare plants and animals. The Chinese merganser and the golden eagle are both first-class national protected animals. There are 13 types of national protected wild plants and 28 types of second-class national protected animals, including macaque, pangolin and otter.

Near the border of Hunan and Hubei provinces, Baixi River Wetland Park is located in Wufeng county in Yichang, an area known for its Tujia villages. Fronting the Baixi River, the park covers a total area of 501.90 hectares and is rich in biodiversity.

Baixi River rises in Du Mountain in Wufeng, flows into the Li River, and finally empties into the Dongting Lake. The environmental quality of the water has reached national first-class standard.

Baixi River Wetland has a central subtropical monsoon climate, with plenty of sunlight and abundant rain – the average annual precipitation is 1,765 mm.
