Liu Faying, a delegate from Yichang to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), has raised more than 30 million yuan (4.17 million USD) in donations over the span of 17 years, helping nearly 4, 600 students from rural areas complete their education.

This was the second time that Liu was elected as a delegate to the CPC National Congress within the past ten years.

Liu graduated from a university in 1991 and applied to work as a teacher in one of Yichang’s poorest villages. While there she helped to fund the underprivileged students education with her own modest salary.

In an effort to increase her ability to do good, Liu started to seek online financial aid for the students under the alias “Sister Yingzi,” in 2005. Five years later she established a website along with a charity team.

To win the trust of sponsors, she decided to disclose her personal data such as real name, employment information, and phone number on her website. After visiting thousands of students with her working team, Liu would also publish their specific requests for funding.

She has united over 2,000 sponsors to support more than 4,600 students so far. A number of students sponsored by Liu in the past have joined the team as volunteers, with some even going on to become sponsors themselves.

Although her effort is often misunderstood as a pursuit of fame and fortune, she continues her funding efforts when considering that some students’ poor financial situations may lead them to give up on their education.

“I will continue funding children in underdeveloped areas to go to school so that they have a greater opportunity to realize their dreams and achieve a better life,” Liu said.
