About 200 domestically cultivated cherry trees of new Chinese varieties are blooming inside Mojishan Park in Yichang City. The trees of the "Chu Hong" and "Chu Jin" varieties were planted in Spring 2022. The pink flowers in bloom are elegant and fragrant, attracting butterflies and visitors alike.
Both varieties start with the word "Chu,” highlighting the regional characteristics of Hubei Province. These new varieties have been bred by Nie Chaoren's team at the Wuhan Institute of Landscape Architecture since 2014.
Compared with the Somei-yoshino Cherry blossoms (Japanese Sakura), these new cherry blossoms have the following advantages:
1. Earlier flowering season. "Chu Hong" and "Chu Jin" bloom about 7 to 10 days earlier than the Somei-yoshino Cherry (around March 15);
2. Larger amount of flowers. Somei-yoshino Cherry blossoms produce only three to five blossoms per flower bud, while "Chu Hong" and "Chu Jin" can produce between six to 13 blossoms per flower bud;
3. Stronger adaptability. Bred from the Huazhong Cherry, a native species of Central China, "Chu Hong" and "Chu Jin" are more resilient to cold and heat.
The blooming in Mojishan Park marks the success of the trial planting of "Chu Hong" and "Chu Jin" in Yichang. In the future, Yichang will plant more domestic cherry blossom varieties such as "Chu Tian Fei Xue" and "Chu Yuan Feng" in additional areas.
