A flock of Chinese mergansers has been spotted in Yanzhiba, Yichang City. This is the first time that these birds have appeared in the Yichang urban area. The Chinese merganser is listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. In China, it is afforded first-class national protection.
The Yichang section of the Yangtze River is the main Chinese Sturgeon Nature Reserve area in Hubei province. All fishing activity is strictly prohibited in this area.
The freshwater ecosystem of the Yangtze River has improved in recent years. These days, various types of bird – such as black storks and Chinese mergansers – are regularly seen in the reserve area.
