The Chinese merganser, also known as the scaly-sided merganser, has a long, wispy crest on its head and scaly black feathers on its flanks.
On the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the Chinese merganser is under first-class state protection in China. There are less than 3,000 Chinese mergansers left on Earth.
The Chinese merganser is a migratory bird which breeds in the north and winters in the south. Every April, it leaves the warmer south and flies back to its birthplace in the Changbai Mountains, in Jilin province, for the breeding season.
