Baby Finless Porpoise Spotted in Yichang

A newborn finless porpoise with distinctive markings was recently seen in Yichang. The calf's markings are a result of the lengthy, over ten-hour birth process, which temporarily leaves indentations on its body due to the compression of the birth canal. Normally, finless porpoises start shedding their skin in the second week of life, and these indentations gradually disappear.

The sighting of the mother and calf together is a promising indication that they have safely gone through the perilous birthing process and are developing a strong maternal bond.
