Six Chinese mergansers have recently been spotted on the Yidu section of the Qing River in Yichang City.
The Chinese merganser, also known as the scaly-sided merganser, has a long, wispy crest on its head and scaly black feathers on its flanks. There are less than 3,000 Chinese mergansers left on Earth. They are a protected bird in China.
For several winters in a row, the improved river environment has drawn Chinese mergansers to Yichang. According to the winter waterbird survey carried out in January 2023, 176 Chinese mergansers were recorded in Yichang, accounting for nearly half of the total number of Chinese mergansers recorded in the province.
