Taojiahu Lake: Remarkable restoration efforts revive ecological beauty

Gazing upon the picturesque Taojiahu Lake, nestled beneath the tranquil azure sky and billowing white clouds in Zhijiang, Yichang City, you wouldn't imagine how it looked a few years ago.

Gazing upon the picturesque Taojiahu Lake, nestled beneath the tranquil azure sky and billowing white clouds in Zhijiang, Yichang City, you wouldn't imagine how it looked a few years ago.
Since the last century, villagers residing alongside the lake had been reclaiming vast tracts of land from the lake bed, and cultivating aquatic products in the lake water. As the lake diminished in size, more and more ecological problems appeared.
In 2021, the government of Zhijiang has embarked upon an ambitious three-year plan for the reclamation of the lake. The plan includes actions such as purchasing the previously reclaimed fields from the villagers and reverting them back to the lake's domain, and enhancing the lake's ecological balance by introducing a variety of submerged plants, including dwarf grass, curly pondweed, and black algae.
It is anticipated that by the end of this year, Taojiahu Lake will have reclaimed a total area of approximately 2940 mu (196 hectares). As the tranquil waters ripple and dance under the gentle sun, the remarkable triumph of the restoration shall be witnessed.
