Chinese traditional cloth shoes are gaining popularity again. Yichang’s handmade Zhijiang cloth shoes are made entirely of natural materials. They use local cattail grass to construct the sole, and rice or noodle pulp to connect the upper half.
Each pair of Zhijiang cloth shoes take over 87 hours to complete all 18 processes.
The shoes are made up of 18 square feet of cotton cloth, combined with over 200 meters of cotton thread and more than 5,000 pinholes.
The cattail grass is a plant unique to the Three Gorges area.
