The black stork is a national Class 1 protected animal. With only about 1,000 black storks remaining in China, they are often referred to as “the giant panda of birds.” In the past two days, 11 black storks appeared on the Guanzhou River Island in the middle of the Yangtze River in Yidu of Yichang City. This is the first time that black storks have been spotted in Yidu.

Black storks are known for being picky about their habitats, requiring clean water and plenty of food. This sighting is a major indicator of the ecological environment improvement that has occurred in the Yangtze River Basin.
