In spring, the Chinese salamander begins its spawning season. This national protected animal is native to Changyang county of Yichang and has existed for 300 million years. British botanist Ernest Henry Wilson discovered and named it in Changyang in 1889.
The Chinese salamander resides in mountainous regions of Yichang, specifically at altitudes of 1,400-1,500 meters. It sustains itself by consuming moss or arthropod larvae. It is currently classified as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
