For 10 years in a row, Chinese mergansers, national first-class protected birds, have been coming to Juhe National Wetland Park in Yuan'an County, Yichang City for wintering.

The 487-hectare area, 37 percent of which is wetland, is ideal for these rare birds, which require a clean aquatic environment and generally live near unpolluted waters.

The Chinese merganser is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red List of Threatened Species. In China, it is under first-class national protection.
