Shadow play performed by Qin Xianhui

Shadow play, an enchanting form of storytelling and entertainment, captivated audiences long before movies and television.

Accompanied by music and narrative, a puppeteer skillfully manipulate the flat, articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets) in front of a light source, casting silhouettes onto a translucent screen, creating visual effects similar to animation, all while captivating the audience with a dance of light and shadow that transcends time.

Tracing its roots back to the Han Dynasty, legend has it that this art form was born when a magician conjured the likeness of the late concubine Lady Li in shadows, bringing solace to the grieving Emperor Wu of Han.

In the featured video, Qin Xianhui, an esteemed guardian of this intangible cultural heritage from Eryue Theatre in Yichang, breathes life into the character of Lady Li with her deft movements.

Immerse yourself in this exquisite performance that weaves together history, craftsmanship, and the timeless art of shadow play.
