A family of three finless porpoises has been spotted swimming in the Yichang section of the Yangtze River.

The presence of the endangered species is an important indicator of the health of the Yangtze River ecosystem.

The number of Yangtze finless porpoises rose from 1,012 in 2017 to 1,249 in 2022, partly due to improved water quality. A 10-year fishing ban was another factor, and credit must also go to a group of volunteers.

In July 2022, Yichang recruited 22 photographers and volunteers to help protect the finless porpoise.
