Li Bai (Chinese: 李白, 701–762) was a Chinese poet acclaimed during his time, as well as the present, as one of the greatest and most important poets not only from the Tang dynasty but Chinese history as a whole.
In the year 759, while the 58-year-old Li was being exiled to a remote area in the southwestern region of the empire, he received a notice of an imperial pardon recalling him. He began his return along the Yangtze River and through the Three Gorges starting from the Baidi Fortress, when he wrote the poem “Departing from Baidi in the Morning.” Recording this stage of his trip, the poem mocks his enemies and detractors, implied by the imagery of monkeys. Three years later, he died at the age of 61.
