Check out this video of the five-tier ship locks at the Three Gorges Dam. The ship locks enable large-sized cargo vessels to traverse the dam within just four hours.
From January to September, 127 million tonnes of cargo passed through the locks, marking a 10 percent growth year-on-year. This is the first time for the ship locks to break the 120-million-tonne mark during the first three quarters of an operation year.
Since starting operations in June 2003, the five-tier ship locks have seen a steady increase in volume of freight passing through.
The Three Gorges locks have the most number of consecutive stages in the world, serving as an important transport and waterway facility in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
