Chexi Folk Custom Tour Site
Chexi Folk Custom Tour Site is located in Tucheng Town, Yichang City. It is 18 km from the city center, covers an area of 20 square kilometers and contains numerous attractions, including the Three Gorges Folk Custom Village, the Farmer Museum, the Waterwheel Museum and the Tianlongyun Cave.
The site is now an “AAAA-level National Tourist Attraction”, the second-highest in China’s five-tier tourist attraction rating system. With its majestic peaks and rocks, gorgeous caves, spectacular waterfalls and crystal clear springs, it is truly picturesque.
What’s more, it is the only tour spot in the Three Gorges area that specializes in folk culture and customs. Its Waterwheel Museum and Farmer Museum are the first such museums in China. The site offers many folk culture activities, such as crop farming demonstrations, ancient workshop performances, farming songs and dances, and bonfire parties.
It is also the hometown of the famous patriotic poet Qu Yuan (c. 340 BC – 278 BC) and of Wang Zhaojun (born c. 50 BC), one of China’s four ancient beauties. Over the centuries, countless historical figures have trod this ground, not always by their own choice. Given the huge distance between Tucheng and the ancient Chinese capitals, literary figures, poets and scholars who were out of favor with the court of the time, were sometimes exiled here. Ouyang Xiu is one example. Many famous manuscripts were begun in the shadow of the Tucheng peaks.
