The Yichang Shipbuilding Industrial Zone in Zhijiang is building new energy ships.

Eight 10,000-ton cargo ships are under construction in the Yichang Shipbuilding Industrial Zone. In total, 50 cargo ships are being outfitted, 40% of which are new energy ships – either all-electric, oil-gas-electric hybrids, or vessels powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

"We have built eight new energy-powered ships, that’s half the year’s total," said Qin Qisheng, chairman of Yichang Xinhui Ship Repair, one of Zhijiang’s leading companies.

The Zhijiang government encourages shipbuilding firms to cooperate with high-level electric ship research institutes.

“We partnered with Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, and other research institutes to develop new technology, such as composite materials and anti-corrosion coating,” Qin said.

Changjiang Sanxia 1, the world’s largest all-electric cruise ship, which entered service last March, emitted 700 tons less CO₂ last year than a traditional vessel.

A natural port with a 3000-meter shoreline along the Yangtze River, Zhijiang is an ideal base for the industry. 10 new energy ship-related companies are active in the city.

In 2022, 86 vessels were launched in Zhijiang, 24 of which are new energy vessels.
