A bun store in Yichang is creating jobs for disabled people.
The "Hard of Hearing" bun shop was established in June 2022. The pastry chefs here are all students from the Yichang Zhijiang Special Education School, most of whom are deaf.
Initially, the store faced some challenges.
"Communicating with customers isn’t easy for people with hearing issues," said store manager Zhou Yanqing.
One solution to the problem is for the hard of hearing workers to be responsible just for producing the buns in the kitchen rather than interfacing with customers.
The local Disabled Persons’ Federation and local companies encouraged catering outlets to purchase the buns.
Soon the store had a Zhijiang-wide reputation for its delicious buns.
Xue Jiapei, who has a physical disability, said it was great to be part of the team at the Hard of Hearing Bun Shop.
The store has created jobs for 10 or more people with disabilities. Per capita monthly wages have increased from 1,000 yuan (US$144) to 4,000 yuan, with the highest wages reaching 7,000 yuan.
"We plan to help 50 disabled people and their families open ‘Hard of Hearing’ stores over the next two years. Each store is expected to make a profit of at least 100,000 yuan per year," Zhou said.
