The rebuilt Gezhouba-Junshan overhead power line started operating at 11:33 am on Friday after more than 480 days of hard work by more than 1,000 construction personnel.
The 500 kV power transmission line starts at Gezhouba Hydropower Station on the Yangtze River and ends at Junshan 500 kV substation in Wuhan.
Built in 1983 as one of China's first 500 kV transmission lines, it has been in service for 40 years.
State Grid Hubei Electric Power started rebuilding the line in December 2021 to boost its transmission capacity. In the seventeen months since, 393 old transmission towers have been demolished and replaced with 399 new ones. A total of 293.6 kilometers of transmission lines have been replaced.
The transmission capacity of the Gezhouba-Junshan line is now 56% greater than before, going from 1.6 million kilowatts to more than 2.5 million kilowatts.
In other words, the line is able to handle about 18% of Wuhan’s maximum power load and is expected to play an important role in meeting peak summer electricity demand.
