Guan Huajie is well-known in Yichang running circles. The 36-year-old Yichang native notched up an impressive feat by completing the 2023 Yichang Marathon in 2 hours, 59 minutes, and 11 seconds.
Guan has taken part in every edition of the Yichang Marathon since it was first held in 2016.
In 2016, Guan was an furniture salesman who decided to take up running for its health benefits.
The first Wuhan International Marathon was held on April 10 of that year. Deciding he would “give it a try”, Guan signed up for the half-marathon.
To his surprise, he finished 65th in the race and enjoyed himself. Guan decided to challenge himself to run a full marathon.
On 22 May 2016, he registered for the 29th Dalian International Marathon. He finished the full marathon in a creditworthy 3h29.
Any amateur marathon runner who can complete a full marathon in under 3h30 is considered competitive.
Guan runs over 300 kilometers per month to keep in shape and in addition uses a scientific method for speed and strength training.
His dedication and hard work have paid off in steadily improving performances and excellent results in various races.
Guan won the men's 30km championship in the Kailas Shuangfeng Mountain cross-country Race, the Mount Tai 100 International Trail Running Race and the men's double category championship in the Ultra Trail Shennongjia Salt Road Challenge.
Still young in running terms, Guan says that he will continue to run as long as his body allows it. He hopes to see more people running and experiencing the benefits of this activity.
