Walking tens of thousands of steps a day, spending as little time and money as possible to visit a scenic spot, do you fancy traveling like this? Recently, many netizens have shared their experience of "special forces tourism".

Most of those who choose "special forces tourism" are college students and other young people. To save money, they usually leave on Friday night or early in the morning on weekends, check in at major attractions, and rush back to class on Monday morning.

Using the shortest amount of time to take in the most scenic spots without affecting next week’s school or work is very "cost effective".

Popular attractions and food are the first choice of young people who love "special forces tourism".

In Yichang, attractions such as the Three Gorges Dam, Three Gorges Waterfall Scenic Area and the Three Gorges Indigenous Scenic Area are popular with young tourists.

Many netizens share their itineraries on Douyin.

According to a staff member of the Three Gorges Waterfall Scenic Area, last Saturday more than 2,500 college students reached the scenic area by public transport. Most were students from Yangtze University and Jingchu University of Technology from Yichang's neighboring cities, as well as students from China Three Gorges University.

In addition, students from Wuhan University and Hubei Polytechnic University have been calling to get information in the past few days.

In 2022, the Three Gorges Waterfall Scenic Area was recognized as a national 5A-level scenic area. The scenic area has been heavily promoted on Douyin, attracting college students. A half-price discount for students is another incentive to visit.

According to Huang Hua, director of the Yangtze River Three Gorges Tourism Development Research Center at China Three Gorges University, this type of tourism is more personal and challenging, and in line with a frugal approach to consumption. He sees it as a healthy mode of tourism.

"Special forces tourism" is a boon for tourism operators. Huang believes that although students have limited purchasing power, they still have a dynamic effect on the tourism market.

However, this type of tourism can put a strain on an area’s public services, environment and tolerance. Tourist destinations and scenic spots need to provide travelers with more abundant information and advice, and adapt their products and services, to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.
