The Central China Artificial Intelligence Data Annotation Centre is up and running in the Dianjun District of Yichang.

About 2,000 people are now working on data tagging. They will be joined by a battery of new hires, as the project scales up 5,000 people by the end of August and 20,000 in 2024, by which time it could be the largest AI data annotation center in central China.

With 2,000 people working, the annual output value is expected to reach 720 million yuan (US$104 million). With ten times that number, the annual output value will reach several billion yuan.

People who mark and tag images, audio and voice content and process this content into machine-recognizable data are called data annotators. The data will be used by AI companies to train algorithm models for applications such as image recognition, voice recognition and autonomous driving.

The richer the annotations, the more "intelligent" the computer algorithm can be. Since the annotation has to be done manually, "data annotation" is a labor-intensive high-tech industry.

On March 28, Dianjun District held an event to mark the signing of 50 digital industry projects worth 11.41 billion yuan.  The National Advanced Computing Industry Innovation (Yichang) Centre confirmed investment in phase 2 of its computing power infrastructure would be three times higher than investment in phase 1.

The stronger computing power resource will support the 50 digital economy firms, and the 20,000 jobs planned at the AI data annotation center.
