The shipping throughput of the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydropower project, hit a new record high in the first quarter of 2023, according to the Three Gorges Navigation Authority.

Total throughput was close to 40 million tons, a year-on-year growth of 22 percent. Nearly 10 million tons of goods were handled, up 12 percent on the previous year.

The shipping volume of neighboring Gezhouba Dam also increased compared to the previous quarter.

The Three Gorges, a popular tourist destination, is busy with travel picking up after the ending of COVID-19 controls. In the first quarter, 430 passenger ships with 228,000 passengers passed through the area.

With no maintenance scheduled for the Three Gorges Dam locks and Gezhouba Dam locks in 2023, more records will likely be broken this year.
