The first green and intelligent ship R&D studio in China was inaugurated in Yichang this past Saturday.

At the ceremony, 37 variations of green, intelligent ship models across six categories were unveiled, including tourist passenger ships, cargo ships, passenger ferries, roll-on ships, engineering ships and public service vessels. Six cooperation deals among different enterprises, higher education institutions and research institutions were signed.

The studio was jointly initiated by the 79th Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), Wuhan University of Technology and Yichang Ship Inspection Center.

This is the first time in China for research institutes, universities and ship inspection institutions to jointly establish a green and intelligent ship R&D studio, filling an important gap in the industry.

Green ships adopt various technologies to reduce air pollutant emissions, fuel consumption and the output of environmentally harmful substances to meet the requirements of sustainable development.

In the context of global energy saving and emission reduction, China has also set its goals for carbon dioxide peaking in 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060. The establishment of the studio will play an important exemplary and leading role in promoting growth in the green ship industry throughout China.

Yichang is home to the Three Gorges Dam and the city has built more than 100 new ships annually for five consecutive years. A new ship is launched here on average every three days and the construction of new energy vessels accounts for more than half of all those in Hubei province.

“The green and intelligent ship R&D studio will attract further shipping industry infrastructure, additional resources and high-level talents to Yichang,” said Hu Zhaohui, Director of Yichang Municipal Transportation Bureau.

The first batch of demonstration vessels includes the world's largest pure electric cruise ship and the first oil-electric hybrid vessel built according to the Three Gorges shipping standards. There are also special vessels designed for Yangtze River passenger and freight transportation, tourism in the Qing River reservoir area and other application scenarios.

They can provide more advanced and cutting-edge solutions for green intelligent ship development in the Yangtze River basin and throughout China.
