The new historical drama "Qu Yuan" is being performed at the Central Opera House in Beijing on 22 and 23 March 2023. This epic drama is based on the life story of Qu Yuan, one of ancient China’s greatest romantic poets and politicians.

Qu Yuan (c. 340 BC – 278 BC) was once the Prime Minister of the State of Chu, but was dismissed for calumny. In 278 BC, when Chu was captured by the enemy, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. Author of the famous poems "Li Sao" (Tales of Woe), "Tian Wen" (Heavenly Questions), "Jiu Zhang" (Nine Pieces) and "Jiu Ge" (Nine Tunes), Qu Yuan was named a “World Cultural Celebrity” by UNESCO in 1953.

The play premiered in Wuhan from March 14 to 17 before transferring to Beijing. It will also be shown in Qu Yuan's hometown of Yichang, and eventually in Hong Kong, Macao and overseas.
