Between rows of ridges in the Qinggangling Tea Gardens, located within the Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County, trees are beginning to sprout new buds. Villagers are picking this year’s first batch of spring tea leaves.

On Friday, Wufeng’s 2023 Spring Tea Garden Opening Festival was held at the garden with tea merchants and experts from Shanxi, Hunan, Anhui, Henan, Hubei provinces in attendance. Eight Wufeng tea companies sold more than 1,800 tons of local products on that day with a total contract value of 83.3 million yuan (US$12.06 million).

Located in the southwestern mountainous area of Hubei, Wufeng County is known as a Hometown of Famous Chinese Tea. It has a long history of tea culture. As early as the 19th century, “Yihong Tea,” meaning “black tea from Yichang,” sailed from Wufeng County to many western countries, earning itself a good reputation home and abroad. In 2022, Wufeng County was selected as one of the Top 100 Counties of China's Tea Industry for the fifth consecutive year. It produced 28,500 tons of tea, earning a total value of more than a billion yuan and bringing tea farmers more than 500 million yuan in income.
