Forty food delivery riders have been invited to act as food safety “supervisors” and promoters by Dangyang’s market regulator and the Communist Party of China’s committee of the food delivery industry in the city.
Zhou Jingsong, director of Dangyang’s Consumer Service Center, said: “Taking advantage of their work, delivery riders can act as preliminary supervisors of the food industry and restaurants, helping to enhance public supervision of food safety.”
If delivery riders find that the health certificate of a restaurant has expired, staff members are violating dress code , or the environment is below hygiene requirements, they can report the information to the local market supervision department.
China has the world’s largest food delivery industry with around 13 million delivery riders who are constantly visiting restaurants. By taking on a "supervisor” role, they can help improve the quality and efficiency of food safety supervision.
Chen Liang, who has been in the food delivery industry for six years and is in charge of a delivery site in Dangyang, became a “supervisor.” “When delivering food, we are the first to contact the restaurant. As a supervisor, we wouldn’t fail the government and consumers’ trust in us, “ said Chen.
