With blue eyes, no cheek pouches and golden long hair on the back and shoulders, the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey was spotted Tuesday at the Wanchao Mountain Nature Reserve in Yichang.
This species of monkey is a national first-class protected animal, and its first appearance in Xingshan reflects the value of the local biodiversity, according to experts. Wanchao Mountain Nature Reserve is located in the northwestern part of Yichang, next to the Shennongjia Nature Reserve of Hubei province.
Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys inhabit the alpine woodlands of various provinces in China, including Sichuan, Gansu, Shanxi and Hubei. As of May 2021, the total number of this species was estimated to be around 12,000-15,000.
