On February 28, a fireman from Yichang intervened to help a passenger who was suddenly taken ill on the subway in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province.

Jin Li, an instructor at the Huanchengnan Road Fire Station in Dangyang, was in Wuhan on official business. In the afternoon, he boarded the Wuhan subway on his way to the train station to return to Dangyang.

As the subway train shuttled along, a middle-aged man standing near Jin started twitching, showing the symptoms of an epileptic fit.

Jin, who has rich experience in rescue, reacted immediately. He caught the man as he fell, laid him carefully on the floor of the compartment, and called the emergency services.

The man kept twitching and foaming at the mouth. Other passengers came forward to help.

Jin opened the man's mouth to prevent him from swallowing his tongue, and told people not to crowd around. The man needed air. Jin tried to use the man's cell phone to contact his family but was unable to.

When the subway arrived at the next station, Jin and other passengers carried the man off the train to the waiting medical staff. Confident that the situation was under control, Jin continued his journey home.

After returning to Dangyang, Jin's firemen colleagues were keen to hear about the incident.

Jin said, simply, "It could have happened anywhere. The other passengers also helped. It was no big deal. I just did what I’ve been trained to do."
