Since the implementation of the Yangtze River Protection Law two years ago, 549 people have been prosecuted across 367 cases related to polluting the Mother River of Yichang, according to a white paper published by the People's Procuratorate of Yichang City on March 1.

In the white paper, the procurator office elaborated on its achievements in protecting the 232 kilometer stretch of the Yangtze River running through Yichang. It has helped advance the restoration of more than 3,000 mu (200 hectares) of destroyed forest and farm land, more than 20 kilometers of river bank, and 40 mu of river/lake surface, as well as helped to clean up roughly 2,400 tons of waste.

Yichang is located along the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River and is the site of the world-renowned Three Gorges Dam. It has two primary and five secondary river basins of the Yangtze and Qing rivers within its territory. Yichang is an important water conservation site and ecological safety barrier along the Yangtze River Basin.

In recent years, Yichang’s procurator office has set up a Yangtze River Protection Procuratorate Office to handle cases concerning damage to the ecological environment and any violation of the Yangtze River Protection Law.
