Three Gorges Dam in Yichang handled 17.35 million tons of throughput during the 2023 Spring Festival travel rush period, a year-on-year increase of 6.87 percent, the Three Gorges Navigation Authority said on Friday.

During the 40-day 2023 Spring Festival travel rush period from January 7 to February 15, there was a substantial rise in both passenger and freight demand.

Of the total shipping throughput through the world's largest hydropower project, 17.23 million tons passed through the Three Gorges locks, up 7.96 percent year-on-year.

The Three Gorges Project is a multi-functional water-control system consisting of a 2,309-meter-long and 185-meter-high dam, a pair of five-tier ship locks, and 34 turbo-generators.
