Liu Shiling, an expert from Yichang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was attracted by a Douyin video posted by farmer Wang Huang about why mushrooms do not grow. This is one of several videos about growing mushroom posted by the 26-year-old farmer.

Wang, a graduate of the College of Science and Technology at China Three Gorges University, is passionate about growing mushrooms and first started practicing at a village in Yichang. The videos about his experiences of planting mushroom are now very popular on TikTok in China.

After being discharged from the army, Wang attempted to learn how to grow Stropharia rugoso-annulata, a specific kind of mushrooms that can be eaten by humans. However, his mushrooms never grew due to his lack of experience. He then posted a video online, hoping relevant experts would see it and be able to provide advice.

On the third day after that video was released, Liu arrived at where Wang grows his mushrooms and helped solve the problem. After checking the nutrients on the mushroom bed, she found that there was too much humidity and the planting method was not proper. With her help, Wang properly perforated the mushroom bed and ventilated the greenhouse. The problem was quickly solved.

Stropharia rugoso-annulata is tasty and packed with vitamin B and essential minerals. It is an agricultural species that developing countries are strongly recommended to grow, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

A growing number of young people like Wang are trying to develop rural industries which can help increase the local’s income by selling rural products to various parts of China.
