This March is likely to see a tourism boom as Hubei citizens jet off to foreign countries after a three-year suspension of cross-border tourism services.

China resumed outbound group travel to 20 countries last month, including Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia, according to the country's Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Zhu Guangying, general manager of an international travel agency, said that southeast Asia accounts for 60 percent of destinations chosen by Yichang residents.

Wuhan has opened up flights to Bangkok and Thailand.

Thailand and Laos are popular destinations, said Zhou Yuling, manager of a Yichang travel agency. He added that 26 people had already signed up for small group tours.

The price of outbound group travel is almost the same as three years ago.

A tour to Thailand now costs 3,999 yuan (US$ 589.8), only 120 yuan more than before the COVID-19 epidemic, said Zhu.

Many people are also enquiring about tours to Japan, Europe and North America, Zhou added.

Travel agencies are now organizing training for tour guides and devising new itineraries based on Yichang tourists’ preferences and flight availability.
