The National Advanced Computing Industry Innovation (Yichang) Center began its pile foundation construction on February 1, crossing an important milestone towards its goal of first phase full operation by August.

The National Advanced Computing Industry Innovation (Yichang) Center is jointly built by the Dianjun District Government of Yichang City and Dawning Information Industry Company Limited. Located in the Electronic Information Industrial Park in Dianjun District, the project has an investment of approximately 3 billion yuan (US$445 million). It covers nearly 78 mu (52,000 square meters) and has a total construction area of 219,874 square meters. Roughly 1 billion yuan was invested in the first phase which will occupy an area of about 27.5 mu in a total construction area of 82,070 square meters.

The project plans to eventually achieve 500 PH/S of computational power, of which the first phase will achieve 200 PH/S.

Computational power (also known as hash rate), in units of hash/second, is used in mining to measure the speed of calculating the output value of the hash function per second. 1 PH/S is approximately equal to 1,000,000,000,000,000 hash operations per second (1P = 1024T, 1T = 1024G, 1G = 1024M, 1M = 1024k).

As a science and technology infrastructure and public service platform, the center will provide computing, data and algorithm services to support the artificial intelligence applications of companies, universities and research institutions. It will also help attract high-tech companies that are dedicated to the “China Chip Infrastructure” project to settle in Yichang, and promote China’s independent development of the domestic chip industry, the center of which is the development of Chinese C86 CPU and DCU chips.
