Central China’s Hubei province will unveil a cross-regional legal and regulatory decision on biodiversity protection. This is the first of its kind for the province, marking the country’s first attempt to step up protection efforts between regions.

The joint declaration, named "Decision on Coordinating to Enhance Biodiversity Protection,” will be co-issued by Yichang, Jingzhou, Jingmen, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture and Shennongjia Forestry District.

Located in the ecologically sensitive zone of the Yangtze River Basin, these five regions boast rich biodiversity, with the Shennongjia forestry region being recognized worldwide as a treasury for plant genes.

Shennongjia is also known as being a wildlife sanctuary and habitat during the Quaternary glacial period, which covers two Biodiversity Conservation Priority Areas of China, the Daba Mountains and the Wuling Mountains.

According to the decision, the five regions are expected to co-establish a consultation mechanism and launch cooperative campaigns including updating bio-protection lists and building more rescue and conservation centers.

This decision also aims at shaping a cross-regional bio-conservation community, to involve regional natural parks and reserves at all levels to jointly declare wetlands of international, national or provincial importance.

For years Hubei governments have attached great importance to biodiversity conservation and have taken a series of targeted measures.
