Yichang’s movie market saw a strong rebound during the 2023 Spring Festival holiday break from January 21 through January 27.

Yichang’s film market hit 14.39 million yuan (US$2.13 million), nearly 10 percent higher than the prior year, according to data from the box office tracker company Maoyan. During the Spring Festival break of 2022 from January 31 through February 6, box office revenue reached13.13 million yuan.

The Pacific International Cinema at Huaxiang Commercial Center had a total of 343 screenings, served 27,300 viewers and generated 1.12 million yuan of revenue during the holidays, said Yan Zeng, general manager of Yichang Xinghao International Film Company which runs the cinema.

The box office of Happy Blue Ocean International Cinema in Aqua Plaza was 694,000 yuan during the break, with a year-on-year increase of 3.1 percent, and the number of moviegoers increasing by 12.5 percent compared to last year, said Huang Mulin, deputy general manager of the cinema.

For the same period, the box office of Wanda Cinema in Wujiagang Wanda Plaza reached 1.37 million yuan and welcomed 26,000 movie-goers, increasing the attendance rate per movie by about 38 percent compared with last year. The box office of Wanda Cinema in Yiling Wanda Plaza topped 1.03 million yuan, achieving a year-on-year increase of about 11 percent.

The high box office sales are due in part to the high-quality content available. The top earners for Yichang’s film market include famous director Zhang Yimou’s historical suspense comedy "Full River Red" and the sci-fi blockbuster "The Wandering Earth II," followed by the popular animated film "Boonie Bears: Guardian Code" for children.
