A ‘thank you’ after 33 years

On January 27, police officer Ding Yi was on duty at Dagongqiao Police Station of Yichang City. A tall man riding a motorcycle approached him and asked about a police officer named Da Yunfei. Ding received the man, who proceeded to tell him a moving story that happened 33 years ago.
The man, whose surname is Peng, was a 17-year student at a training school under Shandong Bureau of Geology and Mining at the time. He came to Yichang alone on a bicycle with curiosity for geology, wanting to explore why the Gezhouba Water Conservancy Hub Project was chosen in Yichang and learn about its geological structure.
After exploring and staying here for a few months, Peng went through all of his savings. With no money to get back home, he came to the Dagongqiao Police Station for help.
Peng met deputy chief of Dagongqiao police station Da Yunfei. After learning about Peng's situation, Da brought him a meal from his home nearby. When Da learned that Peng wanted to return to Shandong to continue studying geology, he immediately gave Peng 20 yuan and encouraged him to continue his learning and not to give up.
With the 20 yuan, Peng was able to return to Shandong. Through his efforts, Peng has gone on to achieve success in the field.
Thirty-three years have passed, and Peng has always remembered the 20 yuan, the meal and officer Da’s kindness. Over the years, he wrote to Da to express his gratitude, but never heard back. He always wanted to express his thanks to Da in person.
In the Chinese New Year of 2023, Peng decided to come to Yichang to look for Da. He got on his motorcycle and rode more than 1,000 kilometers from Jinan City, Shandong Province, to Yichang.
However, after his explanation, officer Ding told him that Da had passed away two years ago.
The police helped Peng get in touch with Ms. Zheng, Da’s wife, who was very moved by his visit. Peng said, although he came too late and could not thank Da in person, over the years, because of Da’s influence, he has been doing his best to help people in need and be a helpful person like Da was for him.
