On January 8, the Infund Holding Group and the Zhijiang government inked an agreement to invest 5.5 billion yuan (US$810 million) in a sodium and lithium battery new energy cathode material plant.

This is another feather in Yichang’s cap in the field of battery production.

Sodium-ion batteries are almost identical to lithium-ion batteries, but they replace lithium with sodium. Sodium is cheaper and more abundant than lithium. Sodium-ion batteries also have better safety performances than lithium-ion batteries, and are well-suited to energy storage and for low-speed electric vehicles.

The new plant will have the capacity to produce 50,000 tons of sodium-electric materials each year, and the capacity to dismantle and recycle 100,000 tons of batteries. On completion, it is expected to generate an annual output value of 20 billion yuan and a tax of 800 million yuan.

Infund Holding Group is located in Dongguan City, Guangdong province. It is an investment holding group with total assets of over 10 billion yuan. In August 2022, Infund New Materials, one affiliated enterprise of its listed subsidiaries, signed a deal with Zhijiang-based Jiangchen New Energy to build a 10,000-ton capacity precursor project.

The strategists from Yichang are steadily building a world-class battery cluster.

New energy projects underway include the Bangpu Integrated Battery Material Industrial Park, the Sunwoda Dongfeng Yichang power battery base, and Chuneng New Energy (Yichang) Lithium Battery Industrial Park, representing a whopping total investment of 250 billion yuan.
