Yichang’s latest waste-to-energy power plant will start trial operation on March 22, 2023. Construction of the plant began in February this year. Its leachate treatment station, cooling tower and pump room are nearing completion.

The project, in Fenghuangguan Village of Yiling District, covers an area of about 168 acres and represents an investment of around 930 million yuan (US$140.4 million). It will have three 750 tons/day waste incineration lines, two 6.4MPa/450°C steam boilers, one 18MW steam turbine generator, and a 300 tons/day waste leachate treatment station.

The project uses the heat created by burning domestic waste to generate electricity. The high-temperature smoke generated when waste is burned enters the boiler, where its heat is absorbed. The steam generated drives the turbine generator to create electricity.

The project is expected to generate about 170 million kWh of electricity annually, enough to provide more than 200,000 people with electricity for a year. To generate an equivalent amount of electricity would require 69,000 tons of standard coal with the increased pollution that entails.

Not only does use of municipal domestic waste to generate electricity reduce pollution, it eliminates the waste of land caused when landfills are used to dispose of waste. The new waste-to-energy plant will help the city to achieve its goal of reducing, recycling and safely processing urban and rural waste, and improve quality of life in Yichang for its citizens.
